The Experience

The Cu Chi tunnels are an extensive network of underground passageways built and used during the Vietnam War for soldiers to move around undetected as battles raged above. Having played such a crucial role during the war, it is now one of the most-visited tourist destinations in southern Vietnam.

On this tour you not only get to explore these fascinating tunnels, but also get there in style: by speedboat. Avoid the masses of crowds that visit the Cu Chi tunnels on a daily basis, and see them the way they should be seen, by opting to take this tour with Les Rives.

Detailed itinerary

7:00 AM - 1:00 PM / 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

At 7:00 AM, your guide will meet you at your hotel lobby, and by car you will make your way to the Tan Cang pier where you will board your luxury speedboat headed to the Cu Chi Tunnels. Breakfast will be served aboard the boat: enjoy sandwiches, pastries, and true Vietnamese iced coffee as your guide explains rural traditions and riverbank life while your backdrop changes from a sprawling city to the lush jungle along the Saigon River.

At around 8:50 AM you will reach the Cu Chi Tunnels, way ahead of the majority of the larger tourist busses. After a brief introductory video to the tunnels, in we go. Exploring the numerous exhibits will give you insight into what life was like underground for civilians and soldiers alike as they cooked, ate, slept, celebrated, strategized, and even went to school in the tunnels. You’ll even see a variety of ingenious and brutal booby traps used to trap opponents. And of course, you’ll get to crawl on hands and knees through sections of tunnels that are only one-meter high. If you’re feeling braver and if claustrophobia does not bother you, you can attempt at crawling through some of the tunnels that have no been enlarged for tourist purposes.

For a snack, you will get to try the local cassava root that helped sustain the troops for years. Then a bigger lunch follows by the river: a spread of dishes containing fried spring rolls, chicken and beef dishes, and soup. After lunch is had, we will return to Ho Chi Minh City by boat again and your guide will take you to your hotel by car.

Important

Hotel pick-up and drop-off is included for hotels located in District 1, 2, or 3.

Some of the tunnels at Cu Chi have been enlarged, yet they can still be claustrophobic. If you have a fear of tight enclosed spaces, then this may not be the best idea. However you can still explore the larger sections of the tunnels.

This trip was well worth the money. We had a fantastic knowledgeable guide who also had a great sense of humour. Chao met us at our apartment and we had a laugh about it being through a hair salon. She was really knowledgeable and sympathetic with a balanced view as we had an American Vet in the group. We arrived early and never felt there were too many people around which was very much down to the skill of our guide Chao. She had catered for my coeliac gluten free diet and the food was brill.

My friends and I went on this tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. We left early avoiding all the crowds that arrive later. It is a treat to be able to actually go up the Mekong and see all the sites and there are a lot! You are given a lovely breakfast and it only takes 90 minutes to get there. The tunnels are something else and I can only admire the people who made and lived in them. The guides are informative and happy to answer any questions. Lastly the lunch, it was delicious.I would recommend this tour, it is well worth it!
