Danang / Hoi An to Hue
Wake up bright and early for your 7:30 am pickup before we head out of the city on our epic adventure. We’ll follow the Cam Le river onto the open country roads before winding our way up mountains passes towards the ethnic hill tribe villages.
The historic Ho Chi Minh Trail takes us north into the mountains and more jungle-covered valleys, the A Shau Valley being our lunch stop. See if you can spot the famous Hamburger Hill where a very prominent battle took place during the war, proudly rising from the Laos border. The winding mountain passes will lead us down and towards the coastal roads, past giant and colorful tombs of the last emperors towards the ancient capital of Hue. End the day reflecting on all you’ve endured on the road, over a cold beer and sweeping views, enjoyed best from the rooftop pool of our hotel.
Hue to Lao Bao
Back on the bikes, you’ll soon be surrounded by endless rice paddies, and the lesser traveled, quiet country roads where you’ll see giant fishing nets across Tam Giang lagoon. Fuel up on a local lunch at Vinh Moc and visit the underground tunnel network where the entire village lived for 8 years during the war!
See the famous Hien Luong bridge which divided the north and south during the war, and is situated at the 17th Parallel marker (the provisional military demarcation line). Next, we’ll take Route 9, passing the remains of many previous US military bases, and then head into the mountains to cross the DMZ itself. A short ride to Lao Bao takes us to a local market where you’ll see the trading of many ‘questionable’ items that frequently cross the border. Off to the hotel where a cold beer awaits us!
Lao Bao to Phong Nha
We’ll start the day with a bit of history when we visit the place where the longest battle in Vietnam took place. Khe Sanh combat base houses a small museum and original tanks, helicopters and planes can still be seen on the runway.
A definite bucket list item for all bikers is where we’re headed next, the Ho Chi Minh Trail, known as one of the best roads for motorcycle rides in Asia! Cruising through coffee plantations we’ll traverse an 1100-meter mountain pass through the untouched jungle and small villages where ethnic tribes still live in traditional wooden stilt houses.
At the foot of giant Karst mountains lies a small hill tribe village where we’ll enjoy a local lunch before heading into the mountains with incredible views before the final stretch of our journey.
Entering Phong Nha National park, a UNESCO Heritage area of breathtaking natural beauty, we’ll slowly make our way along the historic Victory Road down towards the hotel, which will be the final destination on this incredible adventure.
