Sapa - the Northern Hill Station is a must-visit when in Vietnam, known for its stunning vistas, evergreen rice fields and unique tribal culture. Experience all this and more on this off-the-beaten-track trekking tour with Onetrip. You will be joined by a member of the Red Dao tribe who will guide you through the trek, teaching you all about their culture and way of life as you step over stones, wade through little streams, and walk amid lush rice fields to a beautiful backdrop of mountain after mountain.
NOTE: We are currently in the process of finalizing our Sapa 2-Day Trekking Tour and are running trial tours in order to collect guest feedback. Think you'd be up for joining a trial tour at no additional cost? All you have to do is cover your own personal expenses and we'll do the rest. You can read the sample itinerary below to get an idea on what the adventure will look like.
Be ready by 8:30 PM - this is when your Onetrip guide will pick you up at your hotel lobby. From here, we will make our way to the train station because that’s how we’re getting to Sapa! Don’t let that scare you - we’ve booked a comfortable deluxe cabin that has 4 berths and is air-conditioned. The train journey is smooth and you will be able to get a good night’s sleep, and be fresh when you wake up in Lao Cai.
We will arrive at Lao Cai around 6:00 AM, and from the train station we will take a shuttle bus to Sapa. The drive is about an hour and you will get a glimpse of what to come from behind windows.
A breakfast at a local restaurant will energize you for the day. Once you’re ready, we will take a quick ride to Khoang village, and from here, everything is on foot.
Your guide will be from the Red Dao minority tribe that calls Sapa home. As you journey around on foot, they will tell you stories of their ancient culture. As you step over streams and walk through rice terraces you will get to know more about their daily lives living in the mountains, far away from big cities. These tribespeople grow and catch their own food, collect herbs for medicinal purposes, and live a very humble life in this part of the world.
Not to mention the views! You’ll be passing through valleys of terraced rice fields dotted with tribal villages and surrounded by mountains on all sides. The sceneries are extremely picturesque and will take your breath away - but that could also be because you’re a little bit tired from the trekking. No worries, we will stop for lunch at a local village and enjoy some northern Vietnamese dishes while basking in the stunning views.
Around 4:30 PM is when the trekking stops, and we’ll have arrived at our homestay where we will spend the rest of the night. After a short break, it’s time for a herbal bath - a tradition of the Red Dao. You will get to immerse yourself into a tub of carefully selected herbs - an experience that will calm your mind, body and soul. Take the time to relax, breathe in the aromas and enjoy the warm water.
After that, we will join hands and prepare dinner with the family. While cutting and chopping the ingredients, you’ll get to learn about the local cuisine and the dishes you are preparing. You can save the recipe to try and replicate it back home. Once dinner is prepared, we will eat together and spend some time enjoying the cool night breeze before we tuck into our beds.
After breakfast with our host family, we will pack up our stuff and carry on with the rest of our adventure on foot. We will make our way to a nearby village called Trung Chai, a place where we can delve deeper into the Black H’Mong culture, a tribe that has been living next door to the Red Dao for over a 100 years. There will be no shortage of spectacular sceneries on the way.
Here we will also have a delicious local lunch, and then take some rest before heading to Sapa by private car.
For the next hour and half you will get to explore the Sapa town itself, checking out various famous tourist attractions around the square, and also the local market. You may want to buy some lovely souvenirs to take home. The beautiful colors and intricate patterns of the handicrafts will remind you of your adventures in Vietnam.
Once our time is up, it’s time to head back to Hanoi on a shared limousine via scenic roads. You will get to experience the views you missed on the night train. The serpentine roads are extremely fun to tackle, and when we’re about halfway, we’ll stop for resting, and then carry on towards Hanoi, reaching your accommodation by 8:30 PM or possibly even earlier. We then say our goodbyes at the same place we said our hellos, but with a lot of photos and good memories.
Delicious breakfasts, train and Limosine tickets, drinks to cool off (wine is not included), entrance fees, shuttle transfer car, authentic Northern Vietnamese lunches, and overnight accommodation are included.
NOTE: Private car and shared 9-seater limousine are also available for transport both ways, please reach out to us for further details.
