From $13 per night

My brother and I both are bachelors of English. However, he likes cooking and I like rock-climbing and kayaking. We both love to meet people. We have a wonderful floating house located in the most beautiful bay of the world. Our place is always open to guests.

After the government closed the island for two months due to Social Distancing, Catba now is safe and open.

The neighborhood

There are 2 floating houses around our place, one on the right and one on the left. In much further distance, there are some more. They are all fishermen's. The most amazing thing is watching them catching fish (fishing rod, home-made trap, light). We have amazing experience when one fishing with the light decided to join our hot-pot dinner, he brought in the amazingly fresh fish and squids. Others surround us all are Karst mountains emerging out of emerald Pacific water, which hide among them some stunning secluded lagoons.

Getting around

Guests will stay in the middle of Lan Ha Bay with the great view from the huge glass window of the bed room. Guests are provided a kayak to explore the surroundings with caves, lagoons, secluded beach, equiped with life jackets, phone, map and drybag.

We've been to the bay before and wanted to have a special experience this time. We picked this place to be away from the ordinary. I could definitely say it was extra ordinary and we enjoyed every minute of it. The place is well kept, basic, but has everything you need. If you want to be close to nature this is indeed paradise. Immediately when we got there, there was this sense of calmness and we felt so relaxed. The hosts were kind and knowledgeable. We loved talking to them and learning from them. There were about 9 guests there that day and you could see everyone was smiling from inside out. I wish we had more than 1 night. We took the kayak and went around the lagoon and secluded beaches and the floating villages. It was definitely the biggest highlight on our trip. I would definitely come back and stay a week next time. (Website hidden by Airbnb) join the dinner. They cook up amazing dishes!

Thanks again for everything guys.

I don’t think I have enough words to express how much I loved this place. Stayed here for 3 days and loved every single day. Charles helped setup our transportation from Hanoi all the way to the home and back (bus and sampan water taxi) and every step of the way was smooth sailing. He will connect you with very kind and honest people and get you a great rate.

The accommodation itself was very adequate. You’re on a floating house platform, so you’ll be there to enjoy the beauty of the place, not necessarily the comforts of a luxury 5-star hotel. With that said, you will greatly enjoy yourself if you can deal with the trade off between comfort and beauty. I really enjoyed the ability to kayak to beautiful locations like the lagoon nearby early in the morning away from the cruise ships and tourists. Definitely pay for the dinners. Local fisherman come by to sell whatever is in season or has been caught: mantis shrimp, cuttlefish, grouper, etc. Charles and others are wonderful cooks. It is also an amazing opportunity to get to converse with fellow travelers.

Here are some pro-tips to maximize your experience there:

1) Download offline (Hidden by Airbnb) Maps or similar and star major kayaking locations you are interested in visiting (Charles will send you a picture of locations). You will most likely not have any WiFi at all and this will help you navigate with ease.

2) Get a waterproof cover for your phone so you can view the map when you kayak.

3) Bring earplugs because you’re having an authentic experience near the fisherman village where fisherpeople start their work early in accordance with the tide.

4) Bring snacks for lunch, or mark the eco-village nearby on your (Hidden by Airbnb) Map and kayak there to pay for lunch and a beer. Gorgeous view with good food.

5) Lastly, help keep the location pristine and beautiful by reducing your footprint. Though there is soap provided for washing I highly recommend purchasing eco-friendly/biodegradable soap to bring and use because it will end up directly in the sea. You’ll notice bits of trash from cruises and nearby resorts blasting music like it’s a 24/7 frat party if you kayak out. Don’t be like them. Help sustain the waters and area for people who live and make their living off the sea and for others to enjoy in the future.

Charles’ place is a beautiful houseboat located in Lan Ha bay. Charles had all our transport arranged and waiting for us at every point. We did not have to worry about anything! The rooms are perfectly positioned to get stunning views of the sunrise and sunset. We had use of kayaks everyday and were given detailed instructions for how to get around. They cooked us breakfast and dinner and we got to eat the delicious fresh catch of the day. All the other guests were also lovely and we had a great time interacting with everyone over food. We will definitely be back the next time we visit Vietnam!
